About Westham
Westham began as an unincorporated town at the point where Fall Line rocks halted travel up the James River, making it the natural place to transfer cargo bound downstream for Richmond. The town was laid out into 150 lots with streets in 1752 and appears on a map dated 1755, tobacco warehouses included. Iron mattered too, since the merchant David Ross floated iron down the James on flat-bottom boats to a public foundry in the village during the Revolutionary period.
Land beneath the town belonged originally to the Randolph family, and Westham slipped off the maps around 1800. The name survived anyway. Westham Plank Road, the village’s main route, is now Cary Street Road, and a neighborhood built on the town site during the 1930s still carries the name.
